Life is full of a million ordinary moments. As humans, we are often searching for the big, extraordinary moments to feel joy.
These big, extraordinary moments may only ever happen once or twice in a lifetime, so do we want to spend majority of our lives searching and waiting until that “big” moment? How do we feel in the waiting? Unfilled, uninspired, lack of joy?
What if we started looking at life through a different perspective of finding joy in the ordinary? What does this mean you may be asking? It means that when we start appreciating the little things in life, as being the blessings they truly are and when we start becoming grateful for them, the ordinary things will start to becoming extraordinary as we will feel joy more often and life will become more fulfilling and more inspiring.
Opening our eyes each morning is such a beautiful gift we are given. We are not promised tomorrow. When we are truly grateful for a new day, for the air in our lungs, for an opportunity to try again, to be better than yesterday, what a blessing a new day becomes.
Finding joy in the ordinary requires us to slow down, to be connected, to be fully present in the moment we find ourselves in. When we start opening our eyes to the extraordinary beauty around us each and every day. Do you remember how you used to be captivated by the seemingly little things when you were young? Stopping to gaze at a butterfly for ages? Stopping to literally smell the roses? Splashing in a puddle, unrushed and getting lost in a fantasy world of wonder? That little girl or little boy is still inside of you, the only difference is that we have now got caught up in the busyness of life, chasing goals, chasing targets, striving to be bigger and better and in the rush, in the haste and in the chasing, we are missing out on noticing how the ordinary is truly extraordinary.
I am fortunate enough to live on the beautiful Dolphin Coast of South Africa and I find great joy in spending many hours gazing into rock pools and watching and appreciating all the magnificent sea life that can be seen in these pools. I can get lost in a fantasy world of the ocean very happily.
When we start appreciating the small things in life, this is when we allow joy to start flowing in our lives. When we are grateful for the little things we are blessed with much. This is the beautiful flow of life.
How many beautiful little nuggets of treasure do you miss out on each day while rushing around and being distracted? Are you going through the motions of routine and out of habit? Why don’t you try and mix things up a bit? When you start being intentional about opening your eyes to truly seeing all the beautifully ordinary things in your life as being a blessing and a gift, you will soon start feeling more joy and the more you look the more you will find.
Lots of love
